Can birds really sense a storm coming?
There is evidence that some birds can detect changes associated with approaching weather. A Journal of Experimental Biology study on white-crowned sparrows found that declining barometric pressure increased food intake in the laboratory. The researchers described the result as support for the idea that birds can sense and respond to pressure decline.
That is more precise than saying “birds can predict the weather.” They are responding to environmental cues. Falling pressure, wind, temperature and changing light can all accompany an approaching system, and different species may respond differently.
So if your feeder becomes unusually busy before snow or rain, your observation can be real without turning the birds into tiny meteorologists.
Why would birds eat more before bad weather?
Storms can make food harder to find and movement more costly. Strong wind can make flight and foraging difficult. Snow can cover natural food. Cold conditions increase the energy required to maintain body temperature.
Eating while conditions are still manageable is therefore useful. Audubon has noted that birds may feed normally or intensively before significant storms. Once conditions worsen, many birds shift toward shelter rather than continuing to forage in exposed places.
This can create the dramatic backyard sequence people notice: normal feeder, sudden crowd, then almost no birds once the worst weather arrives.
Where do the birds go during the storm?
Usually they seek protected microhabitats rather than disappearing to some distant place. Dense shrubs, evergreens, tree cavities, the sheltered side of vegetation and other cover can reduce exposure to wind and precipitation.

That is also why a bird-friendly yard is more than a feeder. Food matters, but nearby shelter can matter just as much when weather turns rough.
Should I put out extra seed before a storm?
You can make sure a clean feeder has fresh food available before bad weather, particularly if you already feed birds regularly. But there is no need to create an enormous pile of seed “just in case.” Wet seed can spoil, and overloaded feeders can create waste.

Does a crowded feeder always mean a storm is coming?
No. This is where it is easy to overinterpret a fun observation. A feeder can suddenly become busy because a flock arrived, migrants are moving through, natural food changed, temperatures dropped, predators shifted bird movement, or birds simply discovered the feeder.

What should I watch for before the next storm?
This is an easy backyard experiment. Note the feeder activity a few hours before ordinary rain, before a cold front, and on a calm day. Watch the same feeder at roughly the same time so you are not confusing weather with normal morning or evening feeding peaks.
You may notice a pattern—or you may discover your local birds are much less dramatic than expected. Either result is useful because it turns a vague impression into an observation from your own yard.
