Our purpose
Backyard Bird Answers exists to answer practical questions people have after noticing birds at a feeder, window, yard or garden in the United States and Canada.
How we research
We prioritize primary and expert sources such as the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Project FeederWatch, Audubon, government wildlife agencies, universities and established conservation organizations. Sources are linked within articles when they materially support the answer.
Original observations
Some guides may include original photographs or first-hand backyard observations. We clearly separate a personal observation from broader factual guidance. A single backyard experience is not presented as proof that every bird will behave the same way.
Accuracy and uncertainty
Bird behavior varies by species, region, season, weather and individual circumstances. When identification or behavior cannot be known with confidence, we say so rather than presenting a guess as fact.
AI-assisted publishing
Digital tools, including AI-assisted tools, may be used to help organize research, draft, edit or format content. Published guides are intended to be useful to people, are reviewed for relevance and clarity, and rely on reputable sources rather than treating generated text as evidence.
Updates and corrections
